A Clinical Effects of Claventin^(¢ç) on Infectious Disease in the Field of Surgery

Abstract
The Claventin¢ç is a combination of a ¥â-lactamase inhibitor, potassium clavulanate, with ticarcillin. The combination expands the spectrum of ticarcillin to include ticarcillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas and Bacteroides fragilis. An open, prospective noncomparative study was conducted at the Department of Surgery, Chungnam National University Hospital, Korea studying the tolerance, efficacy and safety of the drug in 15 patients with surgical infection, including 5 with perforated appendicitis and intestinal perforation or periappendiceal abscess, 7 with GB empyema and cholecystitis or cholangitis, 3 with stomach cancer and right colon cancer from Oct. 1993, to Feb. 1994.
The results were as follow:
1. A Claventin¢ç was administered intravenously 9.6 gm. a day for 5-11 days.
2. The clinical effects of Claventin¢ç on surgical field were excellent in 6, good in 8, fair in 1 patient, the overall efficacy being 93% (14 of 15 patients).
3. A Claventin¢ç had an excellent antibacterial activity against aerobic gram negative bacilli, especially E. coli and then Enterococcus, KI. oxytoca.
4. The side effects occurred in the 1 case, and its were elevating of serum GPT in the laboratory findings, and skin rash. But its side effects were not serious, and immediatly subsided by disconnection of drug.
Therefore Claventin¢ç was thought to be one of the most effective antibiotics on surgical field with gram negative bacilli.
